BEST BEACHES IN SOCOTRA
There are LOTS of beaches on Socotra Island, so anyone who likes to swim in the blue brine of
the sea and squish their toes in warm sand will be perfectly happy here.
#1 Qalansiyah Beach
This is beyond question one of the best beaches in the world. Qalansiyah beach is located
northwest of Socotra. This beach has an unlimited amount of white sand, and it’s perfect for hiking
and swimming, and no words can describe the beauty of this beach.
#2 Shoab Beach
Shoab Beach is located on the western top end of Socotra. This beach is extremely unique and to
get there you need a boat ride (it takes about 20 mins). Along the way, you will enjoy the company
of a curious group of dolphins who want to say hello. Also, along the way you will be able to see
some scenic cliffs and underwater caves. Once you get to Shoab, the color of the water will blow
your mind, it is so crystal clear. The beach itself is home to massive, purple-colored crabs.
#3 Delisha Beach
Delisha beach is not far from the capital Hadiboh (about 30 mins drive), and is considered to be
the favorite beach to those who live in the capital. It’s perfectly deep to enjoy a nice day swim or
you can just go there to enjoy reading a few chapters of your favorite book in a quiet place.
#4 Arher Beach
Arher beach (not Archer beach, Australia) is located in the far east of Socotra Island. It has a
magical white sand beach, it looks like a white piece of land from satellite images, and it is also
the home of the biggest sand dunes in the island.
#5 Aomak Beach.
Aomak beach is on the Indian ocean located in the south of Socotra Island, it’s the longest beach
on the island, here is the best spot for surfing or kitesurfing as it gets very windy but not all the
time.
THE ARCHIPELAGO’S MARINE LIFE OF SOCOTRA
The archipelago’s marine life is also very diverse, with the island supporting unique
coastal fish assemblages of more than 800 species of fishes, 300 species of crab, lobster
and shrimp and 253 coral-associated (“reef”) species in spite of the limited biogenic reef
frameworks in the archipelago. The coral reefs of Socotra are diverse and host many
endemic species. There are about 230 species of hard corals (of which five are endemics)
and 30 species of soft corals. In addition, it is home to 300 species of crustaceans (out of
which nine are endemic), 490 species of mollusks, 230 species of algae, 2 nesting
species of sea turtle and many whale and dolphin species in its vicinity. An endemic fresh-
water crab, Potamon socotrensis, is common in the temporary water-courses. Because
of this exceptional marine diversity, the archipelago has been declared as an “Ecologically
or Biologically Significant Marine Area”.
THE FLORAS OF THE OCEANIC ISLAND OF SOCOTRA.
The landscape of Socotra consists of about 3,600 square kilometres of dry tropical forests, coastal
plains, limestone plateaus, and mountain peaks. The island, often referred to as the “Galápagos of
the Indian Ocean,” is revered for its rich biodiversity.
The floras of the oceanic island are often particularly rich in species and show a high degree of
endemism. Socotra is no exception. Socotra has one of the richest island floras in the world – on
par with those of the Galapagos, Mauritius, Juan Fernandez and the Canary Islands. However, the
island ecosystems are often fragile, and their native species are vulnerable to overgrazing from
introduced herbivores and being out-competed by exotic plant species.
This ‘Island Paradise Effect’, an idea brought about by mass consumption and the need for escape,
affects reality in situ and the unrealistic concept is actively publicized and exploited by tourist
industries. An oasis in a country suffering from poverty and negative media attention, Socotra has
now become the number one tourist spot for Yemen.
